What is your presentation about?
We identified a mechanism, constituted by the mitochondrial exporter of biliverdin, namely ABCB10, that contributes to beta-cell initiated insulin resistance by promoting fasting hyperinsulinemia.

What makes this topic important in 2022?
It is becoming increasingly clear that there are different molecular defects that lead to the development of type 2 diabetes. Beta-cell initiated insulin resistance is an under-investigated pathway.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
Since my PhD and now as a PI, I have been interested in investigating the role of mitochondria in the development of metabolic and age-related diseases.
