What is your presentation about?
This presentation discusses the burden of youth-onset metabolic conditions, the challenges of identifying risk factors and mechanisms, the need for precision medicine, and how metabolomics can revolutionize this area of research. The presentation will end with a suggestion of advancements needed to move precision medicine from research towards clinical application.
What makes this topic important in 2022?
A better understanding of risk factors, biomarkers, and mechanisms of youth-onset metabolic disease will directly inform prevention and mitigation strategies.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I made my way into the field of metabolomics during my postdoctoral fellowship when I was loosed on an untargeted metabolomics dataset in an effort to identify metabolomic profiles of childhood obesity. I have since applied high-dimensional techniques and related analytical approaches to leverage metabolomics as a way to refine exposure assessment, improve understanding of disease mechanisms, and obtain a better understanding of nuances of phenotypes.
What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
Seeing colleagues in-person after a 2-year hiatus. And of course, the science!
