When Should You Order Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Scans?

This is a talk demonstrating the utility and guidelines that guide clinical use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring in clinical practice. The use of CAC testing is going up dramatically, but use is somewhat indiscriminate. There are multiple guidelines now that advocate for directed use of this test to determine patients at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, who would benefit from understanding their coronary plaque burden. Also, CAC is associated with improved motivation and adherence to therapies, including good lifestyle and medications. This talk outlines the evidence that can help drive appropriate use of this important test.
