The stage is set for the 82nd Scientific Sessions, June 3-7, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, with a robust program featuring 139 invited speaker sessions, 370 oral presentations, and more than 1,000 poster and e-poster presentations covering the hottest topics, latest research discoveries, and emerging trends in diabetes research, prevention, and care.

“It’s extremely exciting and we are so looking forward to, finally, after two years of completely virtual meetings, welcome everybody back to an in-person meeting in New Orleans,” said Dana Dabelea, MD, PhD, Chair of the 82nd Scientific Sessions Meeting Planning Committee.

The Scientific Sessions program encompasses eight major theme areas and each day of the meeting will include up to 14 concurrent sessions presented live in New Orleans, as well as four concurrent livestreams of featured presentations for those unable to attend the meeting in person. The rest of the program will be available on-demand for both in-person and virtual attendees.

One of the overarching themes of this year’s program is the growing epidemic of diabetes, Dr. Dabelea said. Among the many sessions addressing this theme, she highlighted the special symposium ADA Standards of Care 2022 Spotlight—Prevention or Delay of Type 2 Diabetes and Associated Comorbidities, on Friday, June 3. Another important session is A Transformative Approach to the Prevention and Control of Diabetes in the U.S.—The National Clinical Care Commission 2022 Report to Congress, on Saturday, June 4.

“This report contains evidence-based recommendations for preventing type 2 diabetes in both the general population and in high-risk populations, as well as recommendations for treating and managing diabetes and its complications,” Dr. Dabelea said. “It’s hoped that the implementation of these recommendations will improve the health and quality-of-life of millions of Americans affected by diabetes, as well as control the rising costs of diabetes and its complications in our nation.”

Addressing health disparities in diabetes prevention, management, and care, while simultaneously promoting health equity remains a major focus of the ADA, Dr. Dabelea noted. The Scientific Sessions program features several important sessions that delve into various aspects of this ongoing challenge, including:

• Translational Science to Promote Health Equity and Address Social Determinants of Health in Diabetes Prevention and Care on Friday, June 3
• NIDDK Early Career Investigator Symposium—Novel Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Approaches in Underserved and Diverse Populations and Settings on Saturday, June 4
• Between a Rock and a Hard Place—Impact of Food Insecurity among Youth and Young Adults with Diabetes on Saturday, June 4

As always, the Scientific Sessions also feature the latest clinical trial findings and the most impactful emerging breakthroughs in basic science.

“Building on last year’s exciting novel findings from clinical trials like SURPASS, SCORED, SOLOIST, and others, this year we have several exciting sessions that focus on novel therapies for type 2 diabetes and the next wave of incretin therapies, including the role of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) dual agonists in the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, diabetic kidney disease, and the treatment of obesity,” Dr. Dabelea said. “We also have many great sessions that highlight recent breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes, including highly anticipated results from a randomized trial that tested the safety and efficacy of a novel automated insulin delivery system, iLet® Bionic Pancreas system.”
