What is your presentation about?
The groundbreaking recommendations to Congress from the 2021 Federal Advisory Commission on Diabetes. The commission recommends federal action to address diabetes in the U.S. as a societal problem and a biomedical problem requiring coordinated action by both non-health-related and health-related federal agencies. If implemented, the recommendations can transform federal policies and programs to better address the prevention and treatment of diabetes in the U.S.
What makes this topic important in 2022?
The prevalence of diabetes continues to explode, progress in treatment has stalled, and health disparities persist. This report provides recommendations to the federal government to coordinate policies and programs to better prevent and treat diabetes.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I was appointed to serve on the National Clinical Care Commission by the secretary of health and human services and was elected chair by the 25 federal and non-federal commission members.
What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
Increasing awareness of the recommendations of the National Clinical Care Commission among ADA meeting attendees and encouraging attendees to work for the adoption and implementation of the recommendations.
