What is your presentation about?
During my presentation we will briefly describe mechanisms of action of the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and how these lead to metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular benefits. We will also discuss the types of genitourinary complications, highlighting prevalence and identified risk factors for these complications. Lastly, we will provide general recommendations for the management of genitourinary infections in patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors.
How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
By updating clinicians and researchers on the current evidence on the use of SGLT2 and urogenital infections. We will also provide insight to be able to assess risks versus benefits of starting or continuing these agents in patients with indications who may be at high risk or been recently diagnosed with genitourinary infections. Lastly, we will provide guidance as to how to address the management of these complications in patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
SGLT2 inhibitors are one of the fastest growing classes of medications used in patients with diabetes and cardiorenal disease. As such, the well proven benefits of these agents have to be weighed with the potential risks for adverse effects. Genitourinary infections are common in these patients and its management has been a controversial topic.
