What is your presentation about?
The cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) Spectrum is an expansion of the metabolic syndrome medicine to include the kidney. Moreover, now metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is part of the spectrum. Stages are as follows: 0: No CKM risk factors; Stage 1: Excess or dysfunctional adiposity; Stage 2: Metabolic risk factors (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome) or moderate-high chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk; Stage 3: Subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) or very high CKD risk; and Stage 4: Clinical CVD in CKM syndrome. The underlying pathophysiology is insulin resistance which increasingly relates to progressive staging.
How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
To provide a broader approach to diabetes assessment and care that extends beyond glycemia. The goal is to prevent progressive of complications of obesity and diabetes.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I have a lifelong history of type 1 diabetes. During my residency, I became increasingly interested in the science behind disease and pursued an academic track reflecting my curiosity into how diabetes relates to cardiovascular disease.
