Precision Medicine in Type 2 Diabetes—Using Individualized Prediction Models to Optimize Selection of Treatment

In this session, Dr. John Dennis, Independent Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom, will present his perspective on the potential for a “precision” approach to targeting drug treatment in type 2 diabetes. This approach is based on understanding how a person’s characteristics, for example their sex, weight, or standard blood test results, predict how well different diabetes drugs will work and whether people have different susceptibility to side effects. This research is important as, for many people with type 2 diabetes, choosing between diabetes drugs after metformin is a major clinical dilemma. A precision medicine approach would aim to improve on current practice by identifying predictors of differential drug response for people based on their characteristics, and then using this information to select optimal treatment. Dr. Dennis will present a novel framework, harnessing existing routine clinical and trial data sources, for developing and testing precision medicine-based strategies to optimize treatment. The aim is to, in the near future, develop a decision aid that can support clinical decision-making by providing more personalized information on the risks and benefits of each type 2 diabetes drug option.
