Chairman & Chief Diabetologist,
Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre & Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, India

What is your presentation about?
My presentation is about the challenges in implementing diabetes treatment guidelines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These challenges include ethnic variations in clinical presentation of diabetes and also the availability, accessibility, and affordability of medicines, since the majority of individuals with diabetes in LMICs pay out of pocket for diabetes treatment. In my presentation I will be giving some examples of these challenges as well as the solutions.

How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
Eighty percent of individuals with diabetes globally now live in LMICs. Hence, Western guidelines that are suitable for high-income countries may not be directly applicable to the vast majority of people with diabetes living in Africa, Asia, and South America. This presentation could impact both diabetes care as well as research in LMICs.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
As one of the seniormost diabetologists in India, I have been involved in various research projects as well as development of guidelines. I also conduct various drug trials which are directly involved with this area of diabetes research and care.

Extend your learning on the latest advances in diabetes research, prevention, and care after the 85th Scientific Sessions conclude. From June 25–August 25, registered participants will have on-demand access to presentations recorded in Chicago via the meeting website.
