Rebecca Pearl, PhD

Rebecca Pearl, PhD

Associate Professor,
University of Florida

What is your presentation about?
This presentation will provide an overview of internalized weight stigma and its impacts on health. It will also describe potential strategies to reduce this internalization and its harms.

How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
Many patients with diabetes also have obesity and may internalize weight stigma. This presentation may help to spark interest in the topic from diabetes researchers who may not have considered the impact of weight stigma on diabetes management. Greater awareness and understanding of internalized weight stigma among health care professionals could enhance their treatment of patients with obesity and diabetes.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I first became involved in diabetes research by collaborating with the diaTribe Foundation.

Extend your learning on the latest advances in diabetes research, prevention, and care after the 85th Scientific Sessions conclude. From June 25–August 25, registered participants will have on-demand access to presentations recorded in Chicago via the meeting website.
