What is your presentation about?
Interferon alpha is a key regulator of the early dialog between pancreatic beta cells and the immune system in type 1 diabetes. I will present our new data indicating that this cytokine up-regulates both HLA class I expression and alternative splicing, contributing to neoantigen presentation to the immune system.
What makes this topic important in 2022?
It is crucial to understand why the immune system starts to recognize pancreatic beta cells as foreign and attacks them.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
Our work focuses on the dialog between beta cells and the immune system in early type 1 diabetes, and we discovered that cytokine-induced changes in alternative splicing is one of the “words” of this misguided conversation.
What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
To meet again my colleagues in person, and to learn plus discuss the new developments in the field.
