What is your presentation about?

The findings from our pilot study where we aimed to understand barriers and facilitators to assessing and addressing unmet social needs in a home visiting program, Parents as Teachers. We will discuss findings from our qualitative interviews with both providers of Parents as Teachers and pregnant women from low socioeconomic status served by Parents as Teachers. Our study findings highlighted that relationship-based engagement like what is found in home visiting can facilitate disclosure of unmet social needs, but there is a need to address key systemic barriers as well as provide educators with enhanced training on assessing and addressing unmet social needs.

How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?

It is my hope that my presentation will help clinicians who work with women from low socioeconomic status to think about how we can assess and address unmet social needs, which will ultimately help to improve diabetes care for this population.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?

I am fortunate to partner with Parents as Teachers on other projects related to cardiometabolic health. One topic that continually came up as a barrier for parent educators to be able to provide education on topics like healthy eating and physical activity was unmet social needs.
