What is your presentation about?
This presentation will help identify key medical, safety, and logistical considerations for managing diabetes care in non‑school settings, including camps, daycare programs, and out-of-school activities. Practical strategies to support safe glucose monitoring, insulin administration, hypoglycemia management, and emergency preparedness outside the classroom will be discussed. Understanding how to collaborate effectively with caregivers, staff, and healthcare teams to promote independence, inclusion, and consistent diabetes management across diverse youth environments will be shared.
How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
This presentation can have a meaningful, real-world impact on diabetes care by addressing gaps that often exist outside traditional school environments. Reducing risks of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia events will result in fewer acute complications and safer participation in activities. Teaching strategies that support age-appropriate responsibilities promotes independence and confidence in youth with diabetes.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
Throughout my years in clinical practice, I consistently saw how much of diabetes management for children happens in variable supportive community environments. This awareness deepened during my three years working as a camp nurse. My volunteer work with the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) Safe at School Working Group further expanded my perspectives and efforts to improve policies, education, and advocacy for children with diabetes.
