Q&A with Shuibing Chen, PhD

What is your presentation about?
Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) provide a robust platform to evaluate type 1 and type 2 diabetes associated genes/SNPs. hPSC-derived cells/organoids can be applied to study the impact of genetic and environmental factors in diabetes progression. SARS-CoV-2 infection causes beta cell transdifferentiation.

What makes this topic important in 2021?
We studied the relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes.

Which subset of attendees shouldn’t miss this presentation?
We analyzed COVID-19 patient autopsy samples and SARS-CoV-2 infected human islets and found that SARS-CoV-2 infection causes beta cell transdifferentiation.

What else should Scientific Sessions attendees know about your presentation?
hPSC-derived cells/organoids are a powerful platform to systematically examine the impact of genetic and environmental factors in diabetes progression.
