Using Lived Experiences as a Mechanism for Engagement in Diabetes Care

“Transition” is a hot topic in the world of pediatric and young adult type 1 diabetes. However, did you know that transitions during young adulthood encompass far more than the switch from pediatric to adult clinics? Join us for a presentation that explores the many transitions that young adults with T1D face during young adulthood. This presentation will examine the commonalities among four qualitative studies conducted during various transitions of young adults with T1D: 1) the parental perspective on transitioning to college, 2) transitioning to college and the young adult perspective, 3) navigating relationships, and 4) facing the challenges of employment. The aim is to help providers become more socially aware of how to care for young adults with T1D as they tackle challenges beyond their chronic disease. After my presentation, Dr. Persis Commissariat will discuss ways providers can support the practice of “Adulting” with T1D, and Anna Floreen Sabino will share resources to offer young adults from the College Diabetes Network.
