Financial Incentives for Weight Management

8:00 a.m. CT Tuesday, June 16

Weight control is undermined by biological mechanisms and by our environment, particularly seductive messaging, marketing, pricing, taste, and the sheer abundance of convenient, ultra-processed, and calorie-dense foods. Can behavioral economics play a role in changing behavior? Many studies have looked at providing financial incentives and showed that providing money can be a good motivator for behavioral change. However, loss aversion, i.e. taking away money, may be a more practical approach as individuals react more to losses than gains of equivalent magnitude. The talk highlights examples of financial incentives/disincentives for participation in weight management programs and interventions, and discusses these outcomes.
