What is your presentation about?
In this presentation, I will describe the Diabetes Impact Project (DIP-IN) and some preliminary findings. DIP-IN is an eight-year community-engaged collaborative effort to reduce the diabetes burden in three urban neighborhood clusters that experience rates of diabetes that are twice the U.S. rate. This holistic initiative spans the prevention continuum and includes health system-based community health workers, neighborhood-based community health workers, three resident steering committees, and over 60 community health improvement projects.

How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
Ultimately, I hope that this presentation inspires researchers to explore ways to implement and evaluate complex interventions that address diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. In particular, I hope that the presentation encourages researchers and practitioners to work closely with community residents and organizational partners to address primary prevention at the community level, especially in under-resourced communities.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I first became involved with a diabetes prevention and control initiative during my postdoctoral program, where I worked with a team of researchers and community partners committed to improving community health. That experience inspired me to continue working with marginalized and under-resourced communities with high rates of diabetes and solidified the need for more research that incorporates a holistic approach and meaningful community engagement.

Extend your learning on the latest advances in diabetes research, prevention, and care after the 85th Scientific Sessions conclude. From June 25–August 25, registered participants will have on-demand access to presentations recorded in Chicago via the meeting website.
