Using Diabetes Technology during Labor and Delivery

Lois E. Donovan, MD, FRCPC
Clinical Professor,
University of Calgary, Canada
What is your presentation about?
This presentation will address the question: Can diabetes technology be safely used at the time of labor and delivery? Evidence that compares glycemia achieved with versus without diabetes technology (including continuous glucose monitoring and automated insulin delivery) at the time of labor and delivery will be reviewed.
How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
I hope that diabetes care providers will: (1) become more comfortable with the use of diabetes technology at the time of labor and delivery, (2) learn appropriate insulin pump setting adjustments for the use of automated insulin delivery systems at the time of labor and delivery, and (3) develop hospital and call group policies that support the safe use of diabetes technologies at the time of labor and delivery.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
Over the years, women with diabetes whose care I have supported throughout pregnancy have expressed their desire for greater autonomy in their diabetes management at the time of labor and delivery.
