What is your presentation about?
My presentation will describe how social determinants of health are associated with the probability of type 2 diabetes. I will also outline the importance of social determinants of health in the screening of people at risk of type 2 diabetes and its role in the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes. Finally, I will present the results of some studies that assessed the impact of social determinants of health on the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
I hope that my presentation will encourage clinicians to include social determinants of health when they treat patients with prediabetes and diabetes in their clinical practice. I also hope to encourage researchers to develop novel designs in how to evaluate the impact of social determinants of health on diabetes prevention. Finally, I hope that my talk will make researchers and clinicians aware of social determinants of health and how they are related to lifestyle habits and risk factors of type 2 diabetes.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
After obtaining my PhD in public health, I was offered the opportunity to work under the supervision of Prof. Jaakko Tuomilehto in implementing the experience of the Diabetes Prevention Study in Europe (DE-PLAN study). Following that experience, I started to work in diabetes prevention projects throughout Latin America.

Extend your learning on the latest advances in diabetes research, prevention, and care after the 85th Scientific Sessions conclude. From June 25–August 25, registered participants will have on-demand access to presentations recorded in Chicago via the meeting website.
