Professional Interest Group Discussion on Nutritional Science and Metabolism—Emerging Methodologies for Personalized Nutrition—Potential Effects on Glycemic and Other Diabetes-Related Outcomes?

11:30 a.m. CT Saturday, June 13

Any homeostasis is regulated by genetic and environmental factors. Nutrition is the combined processes that nourish the body to grow and continue to be healthy. Dietary macronutrients and gut microbiome as environmental factors play key roles in the control of blood glucose. Nutrients and microbiome factors enter the human body and work with the endocrine system to regulate blood glucose level correspondingly. Now, a one-size-fits-all approach does not work in a population with diverse genetic settings and dietary practices to control blood glucose. Personalized nutrition/precision nutrition, which still needs a commonly accepted definition, is critical for developing targeted nutritional advice, products, or services based on individual characteristics obtained from scientific assays. For people with diabetes, individualized advice, recommendations, and products are needed to achieve proper glycemic control. The advances of technologies and modern nutrition allow the implementation of personalized nutrition for glycemic control in people with diabetes. This online mini-symposium has demonstrated enormous potentials of personalized nutrition in the management of blood glucose. It also leads us to consider challenges that we should overcome in order to understand more about nutrient metabolism, develop additional technologies to acquire data, and educate qualified nutritionists to practice personalized nutrition.
