Q&A with Paul McGuigan, RN
Trial Coordinator,
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
What is your presentation about?
Since type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents is relatively new, little has been published on how to educate these patients and their families. Adopting methods and models of education in children with type 1 and adults with type 2 may not be the best practice. All of this, along with HCW shortages, deserve a new look at reaching a vulnerable population in novel and creative ways. This presentation will delve into this using some examples of previous projects.
What makes this topic important in 2022?
Type 2 diabetes is complicated enough, as is working with adolescents. Mixing them together creates an interesting phenomenon that is not going to go away anytime soon.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
The TODAY study was the largest trial looking at type 2 diabetes in adolescents and youth ever done. I chaired the coordinator committee from the inception until the completion over an almost 17 year span.
What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
Other than seeing friends and colleagues in person for the first time in 2.5 years, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s new in type 1 management. As a former DCCT and current EDIC participant and working in the type 2 pediatric world for the second half of my career, I’m always looking at what is new in the type 1 world.
