What is your presentation about?
An asynchronous, peer-led financial and health insurance literacy toolkit is feasible and acceptable in a pilot study of emerging adults with type 1 diabetes. The components and content of the toolkit and its preliminary efficacy will be described.
What makes this topic important in 2022?
The cost of diabetes is a hot topic right now, and it dramatically impacts emerging adults who are learning to balance personal and diabetes-related finances and navigate the complexities of the healthcare system. Aside from lowering insulin costs for all, we need to figure out ways to support high-risk populations and prevent loss of access to healthcare services and insulin.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
In graduate school, I had an eye-opening personal experience where I didn’t understand my new high-deductible health insurance plan and found myself scrambling to pay for insulin. I became interested in health insurance literacy and financial stress in emerging adults with diabetes and discovered a research gap in this area.
What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
Reconnecting with my peers and colleagues in person (in a COVID safe manner)!
