What is your presentation about?
I will be reviewing the literature specific to the use of bariatric surgery for treatment of type 2 diabetes in adolescents. I will outline the benefits, as well as some of the risks associated with this procedure. I will also discuss some practical considerations surrounding the process of bariatric surgery in youth.

What makes this topic important in 2022?
Obesity is the most common medical condition in youth and rates of weight gain and type 2 diabetes increased in youth with obesity during the pandemic. Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is associated with rapid beta-cell failure and early complications; thus, it is critical to consider treatments that may prevent this.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
As an investigator for the TODAY study and a provider in our clinics for type 2 diabetes, I am acutely aware of the burden of this disease in our young patients. I am passionate about finding treatments that improve their long-term health and quality of life.

What are you most looking forward to at the 82nd Scientific Sessions?
I am so excited to once again experience that collaboration that happens best in person and to see colleagues from across the nation and the globe!
