What is your presentation about?
The medical community has the opportunity to prevent diabetes for millions of people in the United States and around the world. We can empower patients to prevent this chronic disease. My presentation is a call to action for the medical community to identify who is at risk to develop type 2 diabetes; to inform and empower patients to prevent diabetes; to improve diagnosis, risk assessment, risk reduction tools and therapies for prevention; and develop new consensus recommendations for the treatment of prediabetes to overcome the therapeutic inertia surrounding this condition.

What makes this topic important in 2023?
In the United States, it is estimated that 96 million people meet the criteria for the diagnosis of prediabetes and the global prevalence is estimated to be greater than 300 million. The medical community around the world can team with patients to prevent the many negative effects of developing type 2 diabetes.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I have had the privilege of caring for patients as a primary care physician for 25 years and have seen the effects of type 2 diabetes. I have longed for an emphasis to empower patients to prevent chronic disease, especially type 2 diabetes.

How do you think your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
Researchers can use the strong foundation of knowledge in diabetes to better understand the cellular changes in early dysglycemia. The research community can provide improved understanding on who is at greatest risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, and how best to empower patients to prevent type 2 diabetes with the foundation of lifestyle practices and the addition of other medical treatments where needed.

What are you most looking forward to at the 83rd Scientific Sessions?
I am most looking forward to seeing and learning from colleagues.
