Presentation: Impact of Diabetes and Metformin on Muscle Quality and Fibro-Adipogenic Progenitor Function

Associate Professor,
Aarhus University, Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus

What is your presentation about?
I will present data displaying how human skeletal muscle fibro-adipogenic progenitors are altered in the context of type 2 diabetes. This altered phenotype gives rise to the fibro-fatty remodeling of skeletal muscle in type 2 diabetes, which may be reduced by metformin.

What makes this topic important in 2023?
With the rise in new single-cell technologies we are beginning to understand the great complexity and importance of the microenvironment of for instance skeletal muscle. To combat muscle deterioration in chronic diseases this will be an important avenue.

How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
Skeletal muscle plasticity in both health and disease has had my curiosity for many years. Given the major importance of the skeletal muscles, not the least in type 2 diabetes, this was a natural path for me to pursue.

How do you think your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
I strive to create awareness that in order to prevent muscle deterioration we need to understand the muscle microenvironment. In fact, our data indicate that the alterations in the microenvironment is occurring early in the disease suggesting these changes could also impact the initial development of insulin resistance.

What are you most looking forward to at the 83rd Scientific Sessions?
Firstly, I look forward to the other great speakers in my session. Next I look forward to any sessions on skeletal muscle and exercise and of course having time to talk to colleagues.
