What is your presentation about?
The Black amputation epidemic through the lens of systemic and systematic policies that have created a multi generational scar. The virulent practice of preventable amputations still occurs (“amputation lottery”) in spite of pharmacological and innovative device technologies that have been developed, and this epidemic has spanned decades without significant impact in underserved communities. We address how we made an impact here in Mississippi by reducing amputation rates by 88%, raising awareness in the communities, and via policy, proving limb-preserving and life-sustaining strategies to address social determinants of cardiovascular health are possible by a multidisciplinary compassionate team! Introduction of the bipartisan-led Amputation Prevention and Compassion (ARC) Act could significantly help over 20 million patients affected with peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
What makes this topic important in 2021?
It is the perfect example of how health inequities have led to the clinical, economical, and human generational impact, thus little progress in rural racial health over the past few decades!
Which subset of attendees shouldn’t miss this presentation?
All stakeholders who are in the cardiovascular and diabetes space.
What else should Scientific Sessions attendees know about your presentation?
It also serves as a proxy into the Native American and Latinx amputation epidemics plaguing communities of color across the country.
