Heterogeneity of Diabetes—A Global Perspective
Paul W. Franks, PhD
Professor,
Lund University, Sweden
What is your presentation about?
1) Introduction to the concept of precision medicine, 2) Summary of major international initiatives, 3) Why precision medicine should focus on human diversity, 4) Why this is important to help ensure precision medicine enhances and doesn’t diminish health equity on a global scale
How do you hope your presentation will impact diabetes research or care?
Communicating with researchers and practitioners about the principles, pitfalls, and potential benefits of precision medicine may help maximize its impact, along with describing translational frameworks that may be useful to practitioners.
How did you become involved with this area of diabetes research or care?
I studied human genetics in Cambridge (specifically, gene-lifestyle interactions), which progressed to an interest in precision medicine about 15 years ago. I have since led some of the major global initiatives in precision medicine.
