Marisa E. Hilliard, PhD, is a behavioral scientist, clinical psychologist, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. To kick off the symposium Strength-Based Approaches in Diabetes Care—Challenging the Deficit Model, Dr. Hilliard presented What Teens with Type 1 Do RIGHT—Equipping Parents and Providers to Build Youths’ Diabetes Strengths. With foundations in the Diabetes Resilience Model, Dr. Hilliard introduced the concept of integrating positive psychology approaches into clinical interventions in diabetes. She presented research on intervention strategies designed to promote resilience in teens with diabetes by targeting family and health care systems. She shared data on the feasibility, acceptability, and outcomes of two innovative pilot studies that teach parents and diabetes care providers to communicate with teens about diabetes in effective, positive ways. Session attendees gained concrete recommendations for integrating strengths-based approaches into clinical research and care for young people with diabetes. More information about Dr. Hilliard’s research program can be found here.
