Definition and Benefits of a Weight-Neutral Approach

12:45 p.m. CT Friday, June 12

Despite fighting a “war on obesity” for decades, we continue to lose. More and more of our patients are trying to lose weight, and few succeed. What if there was another way? This presentation provides an introduction to the weight neutral (or weight inclusive) approach, which is rising in interest among both patients and clinicians in all areas of health care. In this presentation, we will define the difference between the weight normative and weight neutral care models, identify the risks of conflating weight with health, identify the impact of weight stigma and weight-based discrimination in health care, and provide guidance on where to go for more information.
